Melissa Rayne Dance DYCP Sharing 2024

Melissa Rayne Dance DYCP Sharing - Saturday 12th October, East London Dance

To celebrate the culmination of my 7-month Arts Council England DYCP award, I'll be presenting a triple bill of DanceArt works in progress in an exclusive industry sharing. The aim of this sharing is to help me create new contacts for funding, organisational support, project partners, commissions and development time to build my fledgling anti-patriarchal DanceArt company, Melissa Rayne Dance.

I have leveraged this modest DYCP funding to provide 20 paid R&D, mentoring, performance and co-facilitation opportunities to intergenerational dance artists aged from their early twenties to late seventies - 80% going to women artists. With further financial and organisational support, I am aiming to provide more resourced opportunities to these diverse and valid dance artists.

I hope you’ll join us as we usher in a new wave of DanceArt!

Melissa Rayne is supported by Arts Council England, Acosta Dance Centre, East London Dance, Studio Wayne McGregor, Ugly Duck, Markwell Arts.

Programme

I. Invoke/Evoke performed by Melissa Rayne - a solo dance ritual of "the self-borne, self-begotten" (Ithell Colquhoun, The Erotics of Ballet)

II. Diagrams of Love performed by Melissa Rayne and Rob McNeill - a danced encounter rooted in the Occult Art and sex magic practice of Ithell Colquhoun. It fuses martial arts with contact improvisation, elements of codified contemporary/classical dance and a Butoh-informed movement vocabulary. III. Undefined performed by Samantha Dilena and Sarah Hirsch, with live music by Thomas Broda - have you ever noticed that in dance as well as life, women are often framed in relation to men and/or the roles they serve for men? Even in esoteric circles, patriarchal conditioning categorises women into neat little boxes: Maiden, Mother, Crone... This anti-patriarchal, intergenerational work disrupts and subverts everything you think you know about who and what women are.

Date and time: Saturday 12th October, 15:30 to 17:00 (doors open 15:15)

Venue: East London Dance, Studio 1, The Talent House, 3 Sugarhouse Lane, Stratford, E15 2QS
